Quality Assurance Auditing and Data Analysis of PM Supersite in Southern Taiwan for Year 2008

Absrtact
The purposes of the project are to audit the operation and maintenance of PM supersites in southern Taiwan, to evaluate the performance of method methods, and to study the characteristics of PM episodic events. Therefore, this project includes the quality assurance and quality control auditing of routine maintenances, parallel intercomparison between manual and automatic sampling methods, the analyses of quality-controlled data, and the analysis of PM episodes. The effective operation rates of RP1400 PM2.5 were greater than 90% except that at Chaouchou in October and were the greatest among all measured items. The effective operation rates of H2O2 monitor were the worst and were less than 20%. The results of calibration audit were excellent. Among the 160 examined items, only the gas flow rates of Sunset 5040 are out of the operation ranges. The major items of auditions can be summarized such as the ranges of instrument maintaining and operation are too large and should be set within 10% and should establish the SOP of NH3 monitors such as ESA, Ecotech, and Thermo and the low effective operation rates of H2O2 monitor. The results of intercomparison show that the greater NH3 concentrations measured by automatic monitors are due to the conversion of other gaseous pollutants. In order to understand the formation of PM episodes in Kaoping air basin, this study differentiate the effects of diffusion and extra increment by using CO as a tracer. There are three characteristics in PM episodic events in Kaoping air basin. First, the episode frequency during weekday is greater that of weekend. Second, the greatest frequent PM events are in December because of the poor diffusion in winter. Third, the frequency of coarse particle events increases from January to March due to the effects of dust storm. Among the 163 PM episodic events during January 2006 to March 2008, the numbers for fully diffusion, mostly diffusion, even, mostly increment, and fully increment are 22, 34, 29, 51, and 10, respectively.
